What Is Color Contrast?

Color contrast is the difference in brightness between two colors placed next to each other. In web design, it most commonly refers to the relationship between text color and its background. Higher contrast makes text easier to read, while low contrast can make content difficult or impossible to perceive for users with visual impairments. The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) define specific contrast ratio thresholds to ensure content remains readable across a wide range of vision abilities and display conditions.

WCAG Contrast Requirements Explained

WCAG defines two conformance levels for contrast: AA and AAA. Each level has different requirements depending on whether the text is normal size or large.

Normal text is defined as anything under 18px (or under 14px bold). Large text is 18px and above, or 14px bold and above. Most accessibility regulations require at least AA compliance.

How to Fix Low Contrast

If your color combination fails a WCAG check, you have several options. First, try darkening the text color or lightening the background (or vice versa) until the ratio meets the required threshold. Second, increase the font size: large text (18px or 14px bold) has a lower contrast requirement of 3:1 for AA. Third, consider using a semi-transparent overlay between text and background images to boost contrast. Finally, avoid relying on color alone to convey information. Use icons, patterns, or text labels alongside color indicators so the meaning is clear regardless of contrast perception.
