Threads Bio Character Limit and Links: How Many You Get
Threads lets you add up to five links to your bio, a change Meta shipped on May 15, 2025. You add them under Profile, then Edit profile, then Links. Meta does not publish a character limit for the Threads bio itself, so write it to Instagram's documented 150 characters and it will fit on both apps.
How many links can you put in a Threads bio?
Five. Meta's announcement reads "Add up to five links to your bio", and the same update added link insights, so you can see how many people visited the links you shared in your bio or in posts. Before that date Threads took a single link, which is why so many guides (including an earlier version of this one) still say "one".
There is also a separate Podcast field on the profile, outside the five. Meta expanded it in September 2026 with profile banners and tappable episode cards, so if you run a show, put it there and keep your five link slots for everything else.
Five slots is a list of destinations, not a page. You cannot add a newsletter form, feature this week's launch above the rest, or see which destination converts, only which one was tapped. That is the gap a link-in-bio page fills, and it is a reason to use one of your five slots for it, not a reason to ignore the other four.
What is the character limit on a Threads bio?
Meta does not state one. Instagram's help centre documents a 150-character bio; Threads' help centre documents none, and the numbers you see quoted for Threads (150, 250, even 17) come from third parties, not from Meta. The app enforces its own cap as you type, so the practical rule is simple:
- Write to 150 characters. Threads can import your bio from Instagram when you create the profile, and a bio that fits Instagram's documented limit fits both.
- Count before you paste. Emoji, spaces and line breaks all count. Draft it in the free character counter and trim there, not in the app.
- Do not confuse the bio with posts. The 500-character figure is the post limit Meta announced at launch, not the bio limit.
If your bio will not save, it is almost always over the cap. Cut the credentials first; the first six words carry most of the weight anyway.
How do you add or change the link in your Threads bio?
The path is the same in the app and on threads.com:
- Go to your Profile.
- Tap Edit profile.
- Tap Links, then add or edit a URL. Repeat for up to five.
- Tap Done to save.
The bio text sits in the same screen, under Bio, and is edited the same way. Changing a link here does not change your Instagram profile, and vice versa.
Do Threads and Instagram share the same bio link?
No. When you create a Threads profile from your Instagram account, Meta can import your bio and links as a starting point. After that they are separate fields, edited separately on each app. Your username can stay shared across both; your links do not stay in sync.
That is a feature. Instagram also allows five links (see the Instagram bio link guide for its setup), so you can mirror them exactly or give each app its own. Mirror them if your audiences overlap and your content is the same. Split them when Threads is doing a different job, for example driving newsletter signups for written work while Instagram drives product or portfolio traffic. A tool that supports multiple pages on one account lets you run linke.ro/you and linke.ro/you-threads side by side; Linkero's plans are on the pricing page.

Create your pageWhere should your first Threads bio link point?
Whichever link sits first gets the most attention, so choose it deliberately. Three serious options:
1. A link-in-bio page (recommended for most). One URL you never have to re-edit on Threads, with everything behind it rotated as often as you like. A custom domain like bio.yourname.com makes the URL read as your brand.
2. A newsletter signup page. Defensible if the list is your whole strategy. Use the remaining slots for your site and your shop.
3. Your homepage. Usually the weakest first link. Homepages are built for warm visitors; Threads readers arrive cold from a text feed, mid-scroll.
With five slots you do not have to choose only one. A common layout: link-in-bio page first, then newsletter, shop and one social you want to grow. Keep it to what you would actually want a stranger to tap.
How do you write a Threads bio that earns the click?
Keep it to three parts:
- What you do, in one phrase. "I write about creator tools."
- Who you help, in one phrase. "For indie creators and small SaaS teams."
- What is at the link, in one phrase. "Free starter pack below."

Test any arrow or bullet glyph on Android before committing to it; some render as boxes and waste the space you saved. For more wording, the Instagram bio ideas collection translates directly, since you are writing to the same length.
What goes on the page behind the bio link?
Treat it as a Threads landing page. Threads visitors came for text, so give them:
- A conversational, text-first layout with generous spacing
- A newsletter signup near the top, because this audience reads
- A few long-form links for readers who want depth
- Your other socials, for people whose main feed is elsewhere
Do not lead with a paid product or with video; the audience is browsing, not buying, and in-app browsers do not autoplay reliably. Pick four to six items, order them by importance, and rotate the featured slot as your content changes. The link in bio design guide covers layout in more depth, and if you also post Reels, the Reels creator guide shows how the same page serves both apps.
How do you track clicks from your Threads bio?
Threads' own insights now count visits to the links in your bio. For anything past the tap, add UTM parameters to the URL, for example ?utm_source=threads&utm_medium=bio, and read utm_source=threads in your analytics weekly. Keep the URL in your bio stable for years and rotate what sits behind it; a new URL resets whatever momentum the old one had.
FAQ
Is there a character limit on Threads?
Yes, for posts: Meta announced a 500-character post limit at launch. For the bio, Meta publishes no number, so write to 150 characters, which is Instagram's documented bio limit and fits both apps.
How do you get around the Threads character limit?
For a post, Meta's help centre says that when a post runs past 500 characters, another thread is added automatically for the extra text. For the bio, there is no workaround: move the detail onto the page your first link points to and keep the bio to what you do, who for, and why to tap.
What does the 250 character limit look like?
Meta documents no 250-character limit for Threads bios or posts. For scale, 150 characters is about two short sentences, and 500 characters is a solid paragraph. Paste your draft into a character counter to see exactly where you land.
How many characters are allowed in an Instagram bio?
- Instagram's help centre states it directly: "You can write a bio of up to 150 characters on your Instagram profile." Instagram also allows up to five links, the same as Threads.
Does the Threads bio link count as a backlink for SEO?
Not in any meaningful way. Social bio links are typically nofollow or routed through redirects. Their value is the referral traffic and what that traffic does on your page, not ranking signals.
Five slots, one page that does the work
Threads stopped being a one-link app in May 2025, and most advice has not caught up. Use the five slots for the destinations you want strangers to find, put a page you control in the first one, and keep the bio short enough to fit Instagram's 150 characters. For where Meta is heading with in-app links more broadly, see what Meta's moves mean for link in bio.
